Chichen Itza which means “at the mouth of the well of Itza “, is the 2nd most visited archeological site of Mexico today. The Kukulkan Pyramid in Chichen-Itza which known as “El Castillo” (the castle), is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. You will also have a chance to visit the ruins of Ek Balam. The startling and amazingly well-preserved sculptures uncovered at Ek Balam are exciting to both newcomers and repeat visitors of Mayan sites. Dating from 100 BC to its height at 700-1,200 BC, it is unlike any other Mayan site. Ek Balam has a feel all its own. We will return to your hotel connected to Chichen Itza – this evening you can enjoy the light show at Chichen Itza.
Day 5 June 18: Coba – Chetumal
This morning we will travel to ancient ruins deep in the Yucatan jungle. Coba has the original Mayan Calendar that ends in 2012. If we are still here and the world has not come to an end, you will be able to see first had the calendar that help create movies like 2012 and other predictions of the end of the world. We will then head south to a city on the border with Belize – Chetumal.
Day 6 June 19: Chetumal – Belize – Chetumal
This morning early we will leave our luggage and take a day pack with us for our visit into Belize. After crossing the border we will board speed boats to go deep into the jungle and water ways to the ruins of Lamania. We will then return back to the border and cross back into Mexico and our hotel in Chetumal.
Day 7 June 20: Bacan – Palenque
On our drive today to Palenque and our hotel, we will stop at Calakmul and Bacan. Bacan is one of those highlight Book of Mormon sites. It is just like the city described by Captain Moroni in the book of Alma when he described how they built defensive cities with Moats around the city. Bacan has such a moat completely around the city and dates back to Book of Mormon times. We will then continue on to Palenque where we will overnight.
Day 8 June 21: Palenque
After breakfast the group will enter the ruins at Palenque. Although smaller than the ruins of Tikal, these ruins are our favorite because of their breathtaking beauty. We will use this backdrop to share Book of Mormon insights and stories. The ruins date back to the Classical Period. At the conclusion of the day you will return to our hotel to relax.
Day 9 June 22: Palenque – Tikal
Today is an early start. The group will travel by bus to the Usumacinta River or the "Mayan Nile". Here you will board tribal long boats for a trip down river to the ruins of Yaxchilan which are noted for having the most beautifully decorated door lintels in the Mayan World. These ruins also date to the “Classic” time period. After our tour we then travel by long boat across the river to Bethel, Guatemala. Along the way you may even see or hear the howler monkeys high in the jungle canopy. Once you have crossed the river and cleared customs the group will board the Guatemalan buses. This will save two long, hard days of driving around the river. We will then travel by bus to Flores City where we will spend the night.
Day 10 June 23: Tikal
After you have had breakfast the tour begins with a visit to the spectacular ruins of Tikal. Tikal consolidated its power after defeating its rival cities around the 4th century C.E. and became the center of the Mayan world for the next 400 years. They are possibly the most impressive ruins in Central America. After the tour we return back to our hotel.
Day 11 June 24: Tikal – Resort hotel
Your days will slow down a little as we travel through the jungle to a beach resort hotel. We will arrive mid afternoon, giving you time to relax and take a swim in their beautiful pool.
Day 12 June 25: Rio Dulce River
Today will be a highlight day to remember. This morning we will take boats across the bay into the canyons and rivers around the Rio Dulce River. You will be amazed at how beautiful a boat ride can be. We will stop with time to swim and enjoy both the ocean and wonderful Rio Dulce River and its waterfalls. The Rio Dulce River is also a candidate for the river Sidon. This afternoon we will return to our resort hotel with time to relax.
Day 13 June 26: Honduras –Copan Quiriqua
Now that we are all rested we will leave early for Honduras with a stop at the ruins of Quiriqua. These ruins along with Palenque were mentioned in a Times and Season publications during the time of Joseph Smith. After our stop we will continue to the border of Honduras and on to Copan. Copan is one of the most impressive ruins in Central America. After our tour we will overnight in Honduras.
Day 14 June 27: Honduras – Guatemala City
This morning we travel from Honduras to Guatemala City. If time permits we will visit a large outdoor relief map. The day concludes at our hotel where you will overnight. You will be on your own for dinner but there are multiple dining options available nearby.
Day 15 June 28: Guatemala City – Lake Atitlan
After breakfast the group visits the archeological site of Kaminal Juyu in Guatemala City. This site dates back to the 6th Century B.C.E. and is often suggested as the best candidate for the 1st City of Nephi. After our visit to these ruins we will continue on to Lake Atitlan a place referred to by The Lonely Planet Guide as “The closest thing to Eden on Earth.” The lake was created by a volcanic explosion that was three hundred times greater than that of Pompeii. We will overnight in a picturesque hotel located on the lake.
Day 16 June 29: Lake Atitlan – Guatemala City
You will take a spiritual and relaxing cruise through these pristine blue waters, which are often suggested as being the Waters of Mormon. At the conclusion of the cruise, time will be given to explore and enjoy the Mayan culture of the lakeside villages. Late this afternoon we head back to Guatemala City for our last night before heading home.
Day 17 June 30: Fly home
Our fantastic Grand Tour has come to an end – this morning you transfer to the airport, fly back to the US and on to your homes.
